The Warriors travelled to Burlington, Iowa this weekend to compete in the Tournament of Champions. Schools travel from around the country to play against some of the best competition in the nation. For their first match, Waunakee was paired up against the Manteno Panthers.
The Warriors have been practicing on turf and basketball courts for the past two weeks, and it showed, as the girls struggled connecting passes on the grass. While the Warriors tried to play their possession style game, the Panthers sat a deep sweeper and played long ball. They were able to isolate some defenders and shocked the Warriors with 2 goals in the first half.
At half time, Coach Jesus Torres tried to rile up his girls, and get them out of their rut. The Warriors also made some tactical changes by marking the Panthers' sweeper.
The second half started, and it seemed like the Warriors were starting to get used to the grass again. They seemed to be controlling the game and maintaining a majority of the possession. However, the Panthers got the ball into the Warrior half, and floated a shot over the keeper to tally their third goal of the game.
With a 3-0 deficit and less than 30 minutes left in the game, it was looking bleak for the Warriors. Coach Torres used this opportunity to get some playing time and experience for the JV Players traveling with the team and the other girls on the bench. These girls came off the bench with some
