The Warriors continued their winning streak this weekend with wins over the Eau Claire North Huskies and the Henry Sibley Warriors.
The Warriors came out against Eau Claire North firing on all cylinders, with Nathan Mais scoring on an assist from Sam Acker in the 5th minute. This is the Warriors 3rd straight game of scoring in the first 10 minutes of the game, showing they come ready to play. They were far from finished, though, and tacked on 5 more goals in the first half. During the second half Coach Kliminski was able to get his starters some rest for their second game, and his other players some good playing time and experience on the field. The bench was able to contribute 3 goals and 1 assist, including two late game goals from junior James Bradley. The Warriors will need a continued strong bench presence for the long season.
After about a 2 hour break, the Warriors were back at it against Henry Sibley. Henry Sibley had lost to Eau Claire North the previous day in a stunning 4-3 comeback. Based on that result, many fans were expecting to see a similar game to the earlier one. Whether the Warriors were tired, or Henry Sibley stepped it up, that was not the case. The game proved to be much more of an even contest than expected. Waunakee was finally able to score in the 18th minute on a pass from Sam Acker to Hudson Miller, putting them up 1-0. Waunakee would take that lead into half time. The second half was more of the same, with both sides getting opportunities. Henry Sibley finally got one chance to go in, and tied the game up 1-1.
As the game was nearing the end, Waunakee midfielder Chris Laack took possession on a bad pass in the midfield. He dribbled straight up the middle at the Henry Sibley defense, drawing them in towards him. As the defenders closed in, he found senior captain, Mark Flinchum, speeding down the left side with an opponent hot on his heals. Laack played a beautiful ball into space, letting Flinchum run into a 1-on-1 with the goalie. A simple finish to the corner past the keeper in the 88th minute gave the Waunakee Warriors their 2-1 win.
The Warriors improved to 7-2-0. The Varsity team is back in action on Tuesday September 5th at 7:00 PM in Warrior Stadium against the Stoughton Vikings.
