The Waunakee Warriors Girls Varsity Soccer team started off their 2013 season with an 8-2 trouncing of the Burlington Demons. It is a promising start for a relatively young varsity team that lost 12 seniors from last year, most of whom were starters. The Warriors have high hopes for this year. Conference Champions and State Tournament contenders are well within their reach, and they have a lot of motivation driving them forward after a disappointing upset in last years Sectional semifinal.

The Warrior's high powered offense didn't waste anytime in this game, and scored in the 7th minute off a throw in from Maddie Shaw to Grace Lujan. Quickly joining her in the box score was Emily Mouille on an assist from Lujan in the 8th minute on a driven cross and shot. The duo of Mouille and Lujan then teamed up again in the 14th and 21st minute on similar goals to complete the first hat trick of the evening.

Despite the heavy possession the Warriors maintained, Burlington was able to work the way down the field and score on a chip shot in the 33rd minute that passed just over Senior goalkeeper Danielle Smith's head.

Quick to respond, Lujan buried a beautiful side volley from Macie Maulbetsch in the 37th minute to score her second of the evening, and take the Warriors into halftime with a 5-1 lead.

A keeper switch at halftime substituted Junior Olivia Mecham to protect the net for the Warriors.

Despite now going into the wind, the Warriors had no trouble tallying their 6th goal of the evening in the 42nd minute. Mouille capped off her stellar finishing for the evening after settling a beautiful cross from Shaw, with a simple driven ball into the low corner. Lujan then completed her hat trick and tacked on one extra for good measure in the 43rd and 46th minute on assists from Megan Ejzak and Mouille, respectively.

With a 7 goal lead, the Warriors were able to substitute freely, and get all their players some great in-game experience. A deep bench will be crucial for the Warriors as the season stretches on, and the substitutes showed there is no weak link on this Varsity squad.

The Warriors start the season 1-0-0. They travel to Schofield, WI this weekend to participate in the DC Everest Invitational.
